Midtown Move

It's official, I'm living in the heart of the city. I love being so close to Piedmont Park, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Blue Sky, my favorite restaurants and a whole lot more to explore. I moved in this weekend, and for those who don't know... moving is a WORKOUT. I'm so sore!

Here's the first meal I made at my new place:

Foodie Weekend Highlights

Saturday started off with a foodie tour of the greater Atlanta area. Stopped by Starbucks for a Tall Soy Pumpkin Spice Latte on my way to the Taste of Smyrna on the beautiful village green. Lots of choices for yummy eats there! I decided on Panang Tofu with Brown Rice. This portion was only $3.00! And filled me up so I couldn't "taste" anything else at the Taste of Smyrna, except a fresh lemonade.

Then onward to the East Atlanta Festival where I discovered the Boners BBQ food truck. Let's just say these pork sliders were well worth the visit. Nom!

Sunday morning brunch at Sugar Cakes Patisserie was the highlight of the day. Caramel Latte and Breakfast Crepe with Scrambled Eggs, Onion, Bell Pepper, Spinach and Cheddar with a Mushroom Cream Sauce and Croissant. (I skipped the croissant!)

This morning I walked about 2 miles round trip for brunch at J. Christopher's restaurant. I ordered a Belgian Strawberry Waffle. Nom nom!

Love for the Food Trucks!

I first noticed the food trucks in Austin, Texas last year on my vacation. They were everywhere and super popular! Since moving to Atlanta I've started following the food trucks on Twitter to find where they park so I can catch a bite. It's like an adventure! So far my favorite is Yumbii, a Korean BBQ food truck offering an exciting menu that blends Asian, Mexican and Southern flavors. This post shows all of my eats from the food trucks last month. SO GOOD!

FYI for peeps in Atlanta: the trucks are now going to the Masquerade on Monday evenings!

Field of Flags

I was seriously craving some nature today and decided to go to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, then realized it wasn't just another weekend at the park. Literally thousands of American flags lined the huge field and it was an incredible site to see. Each flag represents a life lost on this day ten years ago. The day America experienced the most shocking tragedy of my lifetime, something we will never forget and continue to reflect on for the rest of our history on this planet. My heart goes out to those who lost loved ones on 9-11-01 and in this ongoing war since.

I don't agree with the misleading message of the media or the politics involved, but do believe that it's a day to remember those we lost and those who continue to serve our country overseas.

Piedmont Park Green Market

The Piedmont Park Green Market happens every Saturday morning, May 7, 2011 through December 10, 2011, from 9:00am to 1:00pm at Piedmont Park's 12th Street entrance gate. Lately I've been sticking to the Marietta Farmers Market since it's closer to home, but decided to venture out to Midtown for a visit to the park yesterday. The market seemed small, but it could be because I arrived at 11:00am. There was a good selection of produce, eggs, breads, pastas, plants and even an iced coffee vendor. The only thing I was missing were the greens...the one vendor was sold out.

My Picks: Organic Green Beans, 1 lb Tomato, 1 lb Granny Smith Apple, Georgia Peaches, Parsley, Pesto Pasta Blend and a MuscaBerry Blue Juice Blend Drink.

Quick Sushi Lunch @ Orient Express

Last Saturday we stopped for a quick lunch at Orient Express, quite randomly, on the way to Dekalb Farmers Market. "Oh hey, that place looks cool...time for lunch!" Located on railroad tracks in the Vinings area and situated in an old train car, this restaurant features three different rooms, each with its own distinctive atmosphere and cuisine: Chinese, Sushi, and Hibachi. I loved the decor in the sushi room. A feature wall was covered in cutouts of magazines, but from a distance it looked fancy. The lighting was interesting too, made of a paper dome covered with natural branches.

All I wanted was what we call a "Summer Roll" in Florida, but they had no clue what I was talking about. So I didn't order anything fancy...just a classic California Roll, Philly Roll and Crab Nigiri.

Escape to the Mountains

I was lucky enough to get out of the city this weekend and take a short trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Georgia. I've been craving some nature lately, so this was perfect. My BIBS (Built In Bestie Sister) rented a gorgeous cabin that was fully loaded with a hot tub, pool table, and spectacular views. LOVE. We made a fire, ate my favorite grilled chicken and veggie shish kabobs, drank good wine and enjoyed some hot tub time. Such a fun way to end Labor Day weekend!

Recipe: Garden Fresh Pesto & Turkey Parmesan Meatballs

I scored an organic basil plant for $2.00 from the Marietta Square Farmers Market a few weeks back. I've been craving pesto lately and could not wait to make it fresh! My parents used to make pesto all the time and I have the recipe in my head. It goes something like this...

Garden Fresh Pesto Recipe
1/2 cup fresh basil1/4 cup roasted pine nuts1/4 parmesan2 cloves of garlic2 Tbsp EVOOjuice of 1/2 a lemonsea salt and pepper to taste
Put everything into a blender and blend until smooth. I used a Magic that thing! Mix the pesto with pasta, use as a spread on sandwiches, or get creative with it! I mixed mine with whole wheat pasta on a bed of organic spinach with Turkey Parmesan Meatballs. Sooo good!

Now my basil plant just needs to grow like the speed of light so I can eat pesto on the daily... ♥ the stuff.
